ExxonMobil and CF Industries Sign Carbon Capture Agreement in Mississippi

ExxonMobil has entered into its fourth carbon capture and storage (CCS) agreement, this time with CF Industries in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

The initiative aims to transport and store up to 500,000 metric tons of CO2 annually from CF Industries’ nitrogen products complex, significantly cutting the site’s CO2 emissions by around 50%. The project is expected to commence operations in 2028.

With this agreement, ExxonMobil has pledged to store a total of 5.5 million metric tons of CO2 annually for its customers, an amount that equates to replacing approximately 2 million gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles.

“We’re dedicated to expanding carbon capture – a safe and proven method for reducing emissions in hard-to-decarbonize industries,” stated Dan Ammann, president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions. “Our partnership with CF Industries is a prime example of how we can assist industrial customers in making significant progress efficiently and cost-effectively.”

This is the second CCS project between ExxonMobil and Illinois-based CF Industries, and the first in Mississippi. Former governor Haley Barbour has noted that carbon capture can not only reduce emissions but also support economic growth in the state.

ExxonMobil brings over 30 years of experience in carbon capture and owns the country’s largest CO2 pipeline network. The initial site to connect to this network will be CF Industries’ facility in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, slated to start operations in 2025.

“We’ve set ambitious targets to reduce emissions from our operations, and CCS is crucial in achieving them,” said Tony Will, president and CEO of CF Industries. “We are excited to extend our collaboration with ExxonMobil for our second CCS project, as their expertise significantly accelerates our decarbonization efforts.”

According to former governor Haley Barbour, the implementation of carbon capture technology can play a vital role in bolstering Mississippi’s economic development while also aiding in emission reductions.

ExxonMobil’s extensive experience and infrastructure in carbon capture position it as a leader in the industry, helping companies like CF Industries achieve their decarbonization goals swiftly and economically. As ExxonMobil continues to expand its CCS initiatives, it remains at the forefront of reducing industrial carbon emissions through innovative and proven solutions.
