Rovco Secures UXO Clearance Project in the Baltic Sea

Rovco has been selected by Iberdrola for the task of clearing unexploded ordnance (UXO) at their Baltic Sea site.

This venture represents Rovco’s inaugural UXO project in Germany. The identification and removal process began in the second quarter of 2024, facilitating the construction of Iberdrola’s Windanker offshore wind farm near Rügen Island within the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Rovco utilized its state-of-the-art technology, which integrates advanced 3D modelling and enhanced inspection capabilities to manage both UXO and non-UXO objects.

Confirmed UXOs were either safely relocated or disposed of, and meticulous inspections of the cleared areas were conducted to ensure the removal of any remaining anomalies.

The operation was supported by Rovco’s newly chartered multipurpose vessel, MV Patriot. This vessel features a spacious deck, an active heave crane, DP Class 2 station-keeping, and work-class ROVs.

These features enabled efficient communication between the site and shore and expedited data processing, thereby accelerating the project timelines.

This project underscores Rovco’s dedication to mitigating risks on seabeds to facilitate offshore installations.

By employing AI, robotics, and simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) technologies, Rovco is pioneering site preparation efforts.

Jesus Rodriguez de Diego Zamorano, Project Director for Windanker, remarked, “The UXO investigation and clearances conducted using Rovco’s innovative technologies significantly contributed to the progress and safety of the Windanker project.”

Marc Coull, Director of O&M at Rovco, expressed, “This UXO project with Iberdrola marks a milestone for our construction support services. We are thrilled to have implemented our advanced UXO solutions in Germany, advancing offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea.”

Kris Moeckell, Head of Construction Support at Rovco, added, “Mitigating UXO risks is vital for wind farm development and the clean energy transition. By integrating our advanced ROVs with cutting-edge sensors, we mitigate UXO threats and secure construction schedules for projects like Windanker.”

Rovco’s innovative approach and advanced technology have been pivotal in ensuring the safe and efficient clearance of UXOs, thus supporting the development of the Windanker offshore wind farm and contributing to the clean energy transition in the Baltic Sea region.
