Agricultural Mechanization in Benin: SoNaMA Meets Government Expectations

The National Agricultural Mechanization Company (SoNaMA) plays a crucial role in Benin’s agricultural development.

This government agency is tasked with supporting farmers in the mechanization and irrigation process, thereby facilitating increased agricultural yields.

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Abdoulaye Bio Tchané, Minister of State for Development and Government Action Coordination, visited SoNaMA’s premises for a working session with its officials. They presented the company’s performance and future prospects.

The Minister of State’s visit underscores SoNaMA’s significance in combating the high cost of living, promoting agriculture, and enhancing the purchasing power of farmers, who make up the majority of the active population.

“Ten years ago, Benin produced between 1 and 1.5 million tons of maize annually. Today, this production exceeds 2 million tons,” he stated. This increase is credited to SoNaMA’s efforts, enabling farmers to transition from a yield of 1 ton to 4 or 5 tons of maize per hectare. These results benefit not only farmers but also consumers due to lower prices.

However, the Minister also noted that domestic and neighboring countries’ demand is exponentially rising, exerting pressure on prices, currently at 450 XAF (0.75 USD with 1 XAF = 0.001656 USD) per kilo. Without SoNaMA’s efforts, the situation would be even more challenging.

SoNaMA deploys over 2200 machines, including tillers and 112 HP tractors, across the entire national territory. An accessible financing system facilitates this deployment, enabling machine acquisition. These equipment come equipped with sensors, and they digitize their usage, ensuring effective field monitoring.

Additionally, a continuous training program for mechanics and the availability of spare parts ensure the sustainability of the equipment.

At the end of his visit, the Minister of State expressed satisfaction with SoNaMA’s progress. He reiterated the support of President Patrice Talon’s government for ongoing and future projects aimed at making Benin a premier agricultural destination.
