Algeria: Internet Subscribers Increase by 26.1% in Three Years

The government has made high-speed internet a key priority in its general policy as part of its ambition to establish an “information society.” Therefore, the executive is taking numerous initiatives to improve the country’s internet coverage and quality.

Algeria had 53.6 million internet subscribers (both fixed and mobile) in 2023, according to the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARPCE in french). This marks a 26.1% increase from the 42.5 million subscribers recorded by the telecom regulator in 2020.

The ARPCE did not specify whether the number of mobile internet subscribers referred to individuals using mobile internet or SIM cards with internet access. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of mobile subscribers rose from 45.5 million to 51.5 million. The fixed-line subscriber base increased from 4.78 million to 6.3 million.

In a radio interview on Monday, May 13, Karim Bibi Triki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, attributed this growth to the implementation of the commitments made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the achievement of the sector’s intermediate action plan goals. He specifically mentioned efforts to improve service quality by increasing bandwidth.

These initiatives align with the Algerian government’s ambitions to develop an “information society” through telecommunications infrastructure and the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). Additionally, the executive has prioritized enhancing connectivity quality and generalizing access to high-speed and very high-speed internet as part of its general policy.
