Egypt: Amea Power to Add 2,000 MW of Renewables by 2025

Amea Power continues its expansion in Africa, particularly in Egypt, where government policies favor renewable energy projects.

On July 17th, the Egyptian Council of Ministers approved Amea Power’s proposal to implement additional renewable energy projects before the summer of 2025. Amea Power is a renewable energy company with a strong presence in Africa.

These projects include adding 500 MW of solar energy capacity following the completion of the 500 MW Abydos solar project, in addition to an initial 1,500 MW of solar and wind capacity. All of this is expected to be connected to the national grid, along with a battery storage system.

This brings the total planned capacity to be added to 2,000 MW for the Emirati company, which is a key player in the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) comprehensive energy project in Africa.

The UAE, through equity investments from its companies and fundraising efforts, is committed to increasing its investment in the African energy sector, particularly in clean energy.

In recent years, companies like Amea Power and Masdar have been multiplying agreements with African governments for independent power producer (IPP) projects, where clean electricity will be sold to national companies for typically over two decades.

This policy is particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, where electrification rates remain very low despite the availability of resources, especially solar energy.
