Ameresco, Inc., a prominent cleantech integrator specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy, has announced the commencement of commercial operations for Kupono Solar.
This solar and battery storage facility, situated at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam West Loch Annex, is now actively supporting Hawaiian Electric’s grid on Oahu.
Dedication Ceremony Highlights Key Benefits
A dedication ceremony held at the Kupono Solar site in Ewa Beach brought together key stakeholders and community members to celebrate this pivotal project, which is contributing to Hawaii’s clean energy future.
The event emphasized the key benefits of the 42 MW photovoltaic solar array and four-hour 42 MW / 168 MWh battery storage facility. These benefits include stabilizing energy costs, reducing fossil fuel consumption, and advancing Hawaii’s ambitious goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2045.
Clean Energy for 10,000 Homes and Significant Carbon Reduction
Utilizing 131 acres of Navy land under a long-term lease, Kupono Solar now generates clean, renewable energy to power approximately 10,000 homes on Oahu. Additionally, it is expected to offset 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
This initiative aligns with both the Department of Defense’s and the state’s long-term clean energy objectives, fostering a diversified portfolio of sustainable energy solutions.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his excitement for the dedication of Kupono Solar, emphasizing its significance as the largest solar-plus-battery storage facility on Oahu.
