Ameresco Sunel Energy SA Begins Construction on 560 MWp Enipeas Solar Project in Greece

Ameresco Sunel Energy SA has announced its involvement in the development of Lightsource bp’s 560 MWp Enipeas solar project in Greece.

This major initiative, which ranks among the largest solar sites in Europe, highlights Greece’s dedication to sustainable energy and economic stability.

The joint venture, a collaboration between Ameresco, Inc., a prominent cleantech integrator specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy, and Sunel Group, an internationally recognized solar photovoltaics (PV) EPC contractor, has secured a significant contract to build the Enipeas project for Lightsource bp. This marks a significant advancement for Greece’s solar energy industry.

Lightsource bp, a global frontrunner in solar energy project development and management, began operations in the UK in 2010. Since then, the company has developed solar projects with an installed capacity surpassing 9.5 GW across 19 markets.

Located in the Larissa and Fthiotida regions, the Enipeas project is slated for completion within 18 to 24 months. The project is divided into two clusters: the Skopia southern cluster, with a capacity of 400 MWp, and the Kalithea northern cluster, with a capacity of 160 MWp.

Approximately 970,000 PV modules will be installed. Once completed, the project is expected to produce 0.90 TWh of electricity annually, enough to power 225,000 households and cut CO2 emissions by 379 kt per year.

Natalia Paraskevopoulou, Lightsource bp’s Head of Country for Greece, emphasized the project’s role in fostering a more sustainable future for Greece. “The 560 MWp Enipeas project will offer affordable, secure, and cleaner energy, supporting Greece’s decarbonization and energy independence objectives.

Partnering with Ameresco Sunel Energy SA on Enipeas, one of Europe’s largest clean energy projects, is exciting,” she said.

Additionally, the project is expected to stimulate the local economy by increasing demand for housing, groceries, and other services, thereby benefiting local businesses and entrepreneurs.

As the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and O&M (Operations and Maintenance) provider, Ameresco Sunel Energy SA is committed to the project’s success through sustainable practices.

The company has already engaged several local contractors and service providers, including civil contractors, community liaison officers, security personnel, environmental subcontractors, and suppliers of water, aggregates, and concrete.

Furthermore, Ameresco Sunel Energy SA has rented accommodations in Skopia Village for project staff and provided two tractors to the communities of Skopia and Kallithea.

Plans are in place to further enhance local employment by hiring additional workers, security guards, and subcontractors for various construction and infrastructure-related roles.

George Sakellaris, CEO at Ameresco, highlighted the alignment of their efforts with Lightsource bp’s commitment to delivering cleaner, more secure energy while utilizing local talent.

“We are eager to collaborate with the Lightsource bp team to support Greece’s decarbonization and energy independence goals, as well as boost the local economy,” he said.

Konstantinos Zygouras, CEO of Sunel Group, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “We are thrilled to be part of the Enipeas Solar PV Project. This collaboration with Ameresco and Lightsource bp underscores our dedication to accelerating the transition to renewable energy in Greece,” he stated. “Our team is focused on delivering high-quality EPC services that will positively impact both the local community and the environment.”
