Aramco Selects AFAC for Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project

Aramco, the Saudi Arabian oil giant, has awarded a contract for the site development and early works of its Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) project to Abdullah Fahad Al-Khaledi Company for General Contracting (AFAC).

This decision follows a Joint Development Agreement with Linde and SLB, and the project management team has already mobilized to the site, with execution work underway.

The initial phase of the CCS project aims to establish a comprehensive CCS hub, including a transportation pipeline and injection systems, with the goal of storing 9.0 million metric tons of CO2 per annum (MTPA) by 2027. This ambitious undertaking represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability in the region.

In the first phase, the project will capture CO2 emissions from three of Aramco’s gas plants, as well as other third-party sources. The captured CO2 will then be transported via a dedicated pipeline, spanning over 200 kilometers, to a designated reservoir for storage. The project’s scope also includes the conditioning and compression of CO2 collected from the Aramco gas plants before it is transported.

The CCS project aims to facilitate the transition of local industries and sectors towards cleaner and more sustainable operations. This initiative is scalable, with the potential for expansion in subsequent phases, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s broader environmental goals and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
