ATCO EnPower, in partnership with Shell Canada Limited, has made the Final Investment Decision (FID) to move forward with the first phase of the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub.
This multi-phase, open-access facility marks a significant stride in ATCO’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Situated east of Edmonton, the hub will have the capacity to store industrial emissions from the Alberta Industrial Heartland region.
Pivotal Role in Energy Transition
Bob Myles, Chief Operating Officer of ATCO EnPower, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Today’s announcement is a major advancement in Alberta’s energy transition. Carbon capture and storage is a vital component of our successful energy future.”
He highlighted ATCO EnPower’s active involvement across the energy transition value chain, attributing the project’s progress to collaborative efforts with government, partners, and local communities.
Strategic Partnership and Environmental Stewardship
ATCO EnPower and Shell have established a 50/50 partnership for the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, strategically located in the heart of Alberta’s energy and petrochemical sector.
This project represents a substantial investment in environmental stewardship and technological innovation. The first phase is projected to be operational by 2028, with CO2 volumes from Shell’s Polaris carbon capture project serving as the anchor.
Future Expansion and Open Access
Future development of the Atlas Hub, subject to further investment decisions, will focus on meeting the carbon storage needs of both ATCO EnPower and Shell. Notably, the remaining capacity will be made available to third-party emitters through open access, promoting broader participation in carbon reduction efforts.
The Atlas Carbon Storage Hub is an integral part of ATCO’s decarbonization and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets. The facility aims to offer emitters in the Alberta Industrial Heartland a valuable resource for reducing both their carbon emissions and carbon tax liability.
Building on Proven Success
The Atlas Hub will draw upon the lessons learned from the Quest CCS project, constructed and operated by Shell. Quest has demonstrated the safe storage of over nine million tonnes of CO2 since its inception in 2015.
