Australia Launches First TAFE Clean Energy Skills Centre in WA

The Australian government has committed $70.5 million to establish Australia’s first TAFE Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence in Western Australia (WA). This groundbreaking initiative aims to position WA as a leader in clean energy education and training, supporting the nation’s transition to a net-zero future and bolstering a Future Made in Australia.

Operating across the WA TAFE network, the centre will offer cutting-edge training in clean energy technologies, including solar, wind, hydrogen, batteries, and grid integration. Furthermore, it will expedite the development of higher and degree-equivalent apprenticeships, equipping students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge to drive innovation in the clean energy sector.

Key Objectives of the Centre of Excellence:

  • Innovate training in clean energy technologies
  • Collaborate with WA TAFEs, universities, and industry
  • Partner with industry to promote skill development and inclusivity
  • Network with TAFEs nationwide to build a strong clean energy skills base

With WA’s numerous projects in solar, wind, hydrogen, and batteries, the centre will leverage the existing strengths of the state’s TAFE network. It will expand access to clean energy training in both metropolitan Perth and regional areas, including Kalgoorlie, Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton, Karratha, and Broome.

Both the federal and WA governments are investing in this initiative, emphasizing the importance of developing a skilled clean energy workforce to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Under the guidance of an Industry Advisory Board, the centre will provide industry access to comprehensive training and workforce solutions.

This hub and spoke model will enhance the capability of WA TAFEs, preparing thousands of Western Australians for a clean energy future. By increasing the number of apprentices in key trades, the centre will ensure that WA and Australia have the necessary skills to achieve their net-zero goals.
