Avangrid’s True North Solar Project Delivers Initial Power to Texas Grid

Avangrid, Inc., a prominent sustainable energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, has initiated electricity generation from its True North solar project located in Falls County, Texas, near Waco.

With 20 MW currently operational, this represents a significant step forward for what is set to become the largest solar power project within Avangrid’s portfolio, marking its inaugural solar venture in Texas.

Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is fantastic news, not only for the timely completion of True North but also for the state of Texas as a whole.

Through the dedicated efforts of our team and contractors, we are now able to provide additional clean energy to the Texas electrical grid as we enter the summer months.

I am pleased to witness this project’s advancement as Avangrid continues its mission to accelerate the transition to clean energy across the United States.”

True North will emerge as a 238 MWac (321 MWdc) solar farm. Upon completion, it will supply clean, renewable energy to support Meta’s commitment to net-zero emissions.

This includes powering Meta’s upcoming data center in neighboring Temple, its second such facility in Texas, entirely with renewable energy. Even before full commercial operations, anticipated by the end of 2024, the project will contribute power to customers on the Texas grid.

Throughout its construction and operation phases, the project is generating local employment opportunities and bolstering neighboring communities.

It is projected to contribute over US$40 million in property taxes throughout its operational lifespan, directly supporting essential public services such as safety, fire protection, and local schools.
