BayWa r.e. Divests 95 MW Spanish Solar Farm to Encavis AG

BayWa r.e. has completed the sale of its Almodóvar solar farm in Spain to Encavis AG, a leading independent power producer (IPP).

Situated in Andalucía near Córdoba, the solar farm is anticipated to be integrated into the grid by the fourth quarter of 2025. With a capacity of 95 MW and an estimated annual electricity output of 187 GWh, the Almodóvar project will substantially contribute to Spain’s energy transition.

Following the sale of the 109 MW Lirios solar farm earlier this year, this transaction signifies another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between BayWa r.e. and Encavis AG.

The two companies are leveraging their combined expertise to progress numerous solar and wind projects across Europe.

The Almodóvar solar farm is part of a 10-year Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) signed by BayWa r.e. with Huhtamaki, a prominent global provider of sustainable packaging solutions based in Finland.

This agreement, encompassing two Spanish solar farms, will cover approximately 80% of Huhtamaki’s electricity requirements in Europe. Notably, it represents the largest European solar corporate VPPA for the packaging industry and the first of its kind for a Finnish company.

BayWa r.e. is committed to enhancing biodiversity throughout the project’s construction and operation. The company plans to implement various measures, including establishing two ponds for invertebrates and amphibians, installing nesting boxes, and creating shelters for small mammals, insects, and bats.

Additionally, they will cultivate leguminous and cereal species on approximately 82 hectares near the project site to provide habitat for steppe birds.

Matthias Taft, CEO of BayWa r.e. AG, expressed satisfaction with the sale, highlighting it as part of ongoing project deliveries in Europe.

He emphasized the company’s strong position to drive further growth in wind, solar, and battery storage projects amidst the accelerating energy transition.

Juanjo Álvarez, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. Projects Spain, underscored the company’s decade-long involvement in the Spanish market, with over 600 MW of wind and solar projects realized. He reaffirmed BayWa r.e.’s commitment to advancing the energy transition in Spain and beyond.
