Doubled Charging Units for Faster Electric Vehicle Charging
BC Hydro has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) fast charging site in Cranbrook, doubling the number of chargers by adding a new 100-kilowatt charging unit. This upgrade aims to enhance charging speed and convenience for EV drivers.
Supporting the CleanBC Climate Plan
Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, highlighted the significance of this expansion in promoting the transition to clean electricity-powered vehicles, aligning with the province’s CleanBC climate plan. The new charger in Cranbrook improves accessibility and affordability for British Columbians who are considering switching to EVs.
Upgraded Charging Speeds and Enhanced Accessibility
The Cranbrook site, initially opened in 2017, now features two charging units: a 50-kilowatt unit that can add 50 kilometers of range in about 10 minutes and a new 100-kilowatt unit that can add 100 kilometers in the same timeframe. The updated location also boasts a curbless design and lower displays for improved accessibility.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
Environment and Climate Change Strategy Minister George Heyman emphasized the positive impact of increased EV charging infrastructure on the environment and the economy, contributing to the province’s goal of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030.
The adoption of electric vehicles in British Columbia is rapidly increasing, with over 160,000 EVs on the road and projections of 700,000 to 900,000 EVs within the next decade.
Expansion of BC Hydro’s Fast Charging Network
Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro, acknowledged the growing demand for EV charging and outlined the company’s ongoing investments in expanding the fast charging network across the province. The goal is to ensure geographic connectivity, with a charging station located at least every 150 kilometers.
Funding and Future Plans
BC Hydro’s provincewide fast charging network currently encompasses 211 charging ports at 91 sites across British Columbia. The company, in partnership with the Province of B.C. and Natural Resources Canada, plans to add 3,000 more ports by 2030. This collaborative effort aims to support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to a cleaner transportation future.
