Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to Auction Geothermal Leases in Nevada

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is inviting public comments on proposed geothermal lease sales scheduled for October 2024 in Nevada.

The sale will encompass 70 parcels spanning over 234,000 acres across the state. Written comments must be submitted by July 18, 2024.

The parcels are distributed across four BLM district offices:

  • BLM Battle Mountain District Office
  • BLM Carson City District Office
  • BLM Elko District Office
  • BLM Winnemucca District Office

Detailed information on the parcels, including maps, stipulations, and comment portals, can be found on the official BLM announcement. Please note that some links may be outdated and will be updated by the BLM shortly.

Geothermal leases issued by the BLM have a 10-year term. For each parcel, 50% of the bid, rental receipts, and royalties are distributed to the state, 25% goes to the respective county, and the remaining 25% is retained by the U.S. Treasury.

Each lease includes standard stipulations to safeguard endangered species, cultural resources, and ensure environmentally responsible development. Lessees must submit site-specific proposals for further analysis before drilling can commence.

In the most recent competitive geothermal lease sale in Nevada, the BLM received over $1 million in bids for 33 parcels. This demonstrates the growing interest in geothermal energy development in the state.

The proposed October 2024 lease sale presents a significant opportunity for geothermal energy development in Nevada. The BLM encourages interested parties to review the available information and submit their comments before the July 18th deadline.
