Botswana: Significant Increase in Gas Potential at Serowe Project

An assessment conducted by Sproule Associates and released on Monday, July 8th, revealed that the gas potential of the coalbed methane project operated by Australian company Botala Energy in Serowe, Botswana, has surged by over 40%, reaching 450 billion cubic feet.

This substantial increase in estimated reserves marks a significant milestone for the project and the region’s energy landscape.

Over the past two years, Botala Energy has intensified exploration efforts at the Serowe site, confirming the presence of methane gas in the Upper Morupule and Lower Morupule formations, specifically within a geological interval of approximately 33 meters. These findings have significantly boosted the project’s resource potential.

This resource upgrade is a positive development for Botala Energy, which has been actively working to monetize coalbed methane resources in Botswana and Southern Africa for two decades. Kris Martinick, Managing Director of Botala Energy, sees this as an opportunity to “supply gas to an energy-hungry Southern Africa, particularly the neighboring industrial heartland of South Africa,” which is facing a significant energy deficit.

While the increased gas potential is promising, Botala Energy acknowledges the need to confirm that the gas can be produced in commercially viable quantities. This involves addressing various challenges, including securing financing and obtaining regulatory approvals, before the project can move forward with full-scale production.

In a separate development, Botala Energy recently formed a partnership with AAAS to develop a 250 MW solar power project. This collaboration demonstrates the company’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and contributing to the growth of renewable energy in the region.

The Serowe coalbed methane project, with its increased resource potential, has the potential to play a crucial role in addressing Southern Africa’s energy needs. By tapping into this abundant resource, Botala Energy aims to contribute to energy security and economic development in the region while minimizing environmental impact.

The success of the Serowe project hinges on overcoming technical and regulatory challenges to achieve commercial production. However, the significant increase in gas potential, coupled with the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, positions Botala Energy as a key player in the evolving energy landscape of Southern Africa.
