The upgrade project aims to establish a modern road corridor for enhanced mobility and trade with Côte d’Ivoire, which is also undertaking similar projects to connect to the Burkina Faso border.
Funding and Implementation
The Burkina Faso government has approved the ratification of a loan agreement with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for the upgrade of the Bobo-Banfora-Côte d’Ivoire border and Banfora-Orodara road axes. The project, co-financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Burkinabe government, is currently in the call for expressions of interest phase.
Project Scope and Timeline
According to the IsDB, the funds will cover updating environmental and social impact studies, reviewing procurement and contract award processes, and providing technical, administrative, and financial oversight of the construction works. Preliminary activities will span 20 months, followed by an 18-month construction phase.
Benefits of Enhanced Connectivity
The upgraded road is expected to facilitate regional trade, economic exchange, and the sale of agricultural, forestry, and livestock products. It will also strengthen cultural exchange and social cohesion both nationally and regionally.
Strategic Importance of Road Infrastructure
Beyond the benefits of improved connectivity with Côte d’Ivoire, a historical trading partner, these projects are part of a broader roadmap unveiled by the Burkinabe transitional government in June 2023. This roadmap aims to enhance accessibility to other neighboring countries like Niger and Mali, which have become strategic trading partners since the establishment of the AES bloc.
