A subway station under construction in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu experienced a collapse early Friday morning, resulting in a large sinkhole forming on a road in a bustling tourist and commercial area.
No Casualties Reported in the Incident
Fortunately, there were no casualties in the accident. According to Chengdu Rail Construction’s official Weibo page, the collapse occurred after two water pipes ruptured within the subway’s construction pit.
State broadcaster CCTV aired footage of the sinkhole. Emergency personnel assured local media that the incident would not compromise the safety of nearby buildings.
Popular Tourist Area and Future Metro Line
The affected area is a popular destination for visitors who come to admire the native ginkgo trees. Chengdu Metro Line 13, featuring 21 underground stations, is scheduled to open in 2025.
China has consistently mandated stricter safety standards across various industries, including mining, road transportation, and construction, in an effort to prevent such accidents and ensure public safety.
