Chevy Blazer EV Launches in Brazil to Challenge BYD Dominance

General Motors (GM) is gearing up for a major electric vehicle (EV) push in Brazil, Latin America’s largest automotive market.

The Chevrolet Blazer EV will be the spearhead of this campaign, as GM seeks to counter the rising dominance of BYD and other Chinese EV manufacturers in the region.

As one of GM’s most recognizable nameplates, the all-electric Blazer plays a pivotal role in the company’s broader EV strategy.

Introduced in 2022 as part of Chevy’s next-generation EV lineup, alongside the Equinox and Silverado EVs, the Blazer EV has already seen significant sales.

With production ramping up, GM sold 7,234 Blazer EVs in the first half of 2024, with 6,634 of those sales occurring in the second quarter.

GM reports that the electric SUV is attracting new customers to the brand, with 40% of Blazer EV buyers switching from brands like Jeep, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia.

Building on the Blazer EV’s growing popularity in the US, GM is preparing to launch it in another key market: Brazil.

Brazil holds the position of the sixth-largest car market globally, recording over 2.18 million new car registrations in 2023 according to Statista.

Brazil stands out not only as a major car market but also as a significant vehicle manufacturer. However, the EV landscape in Brazil is currently led by China’s BYD.

The company sold nearly 15,000 electrified cars in the country during the first three months of 2024, spearheading Brazil’s EV transition.

The launch of the Dolphin Mini (known as the Seagull in China) in March further solidified BYD’s position, with its affordability (around $20,000) making it one of the cheapest electric options in the country.

The Chevy Blazer EV is set to launch in Brazil on August 1, 2024. GM has stated that this marks a “new era for the brand” in the country, highlighting the advanced technology and connectivity features of the SUV.

The success of the Blazer EV in Brazil will likely depend on its final pricing and specifications, which will be revealed next week.

In the US, the Blazer EV starts at $50,195 with up to 279 miles of range, and tax credits can lower the price to as low as $42,695.

The Brazilian launch will feature the RS model, available in both eAWD (279 miles range) and RWD (324 miles range) options in the US. Whether the Blazer EV can compete with BYD’s affordability and secure a strong foothold in the Brazilian market remains to be seen.
