Clean Cooking Solutions in Mozambique Get $1.41 Million Funding Boost

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique, a subsidiary of ENGIE Energy Access, has secured a new funding agreement to support clean cooking solutions in Mozambique. The $1.41 million results-based financing, provided by the Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA), will enable the mobilization of additional co-financing, at least doubling the total invested capital by the end of the project’s implementation.

With this funding, ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique will provide its customers with innovative biodigesters. These biodigesters will empower farmers to convert agricultural waste into biogaz and fertilizer through a PAYGo business model. The company also aims to promote and sell biogas stoves to facilitate clean cooking in three southern provinces of the country.

“This initiative represents a transformational leap towards sustainable development in Mozambique,” said Alexandra Links, Managing Director of ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique. “By equipping rural communities with cutting-edge clean cooking solutions, we are not only improving health and mitigating environmental impacts, but also stimulating economic growth and resilience.”

More than 900 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to modern and clean cooking solutions. It is the only region in the world where access to clean cooking has not kept pace with population growth. This not only leads to massive pollution but also poses health risks to the population. The funding secured by ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique is a significant step towards addressing this critical issue and promoting sustainable development in the region.
