COP29 Partners with IRENA to Monitor COP28 Energy Outcomes

Azerbaijan, as the incoming COP29 Presidency, will collaborate with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to monitor progress towards the ambitious goals set forth in the UAE Consensus at COP28. These goals include tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030.

Azerbaijan’s Minister for Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, and IRENA’s Director-General, Francesco La Camera, confirmed the partnership during the Baku Energy Week. Both parties also agreed to co-host a joint launch event at the Pre-COP meeting in Baku, leading up to COP29.

In May, COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber officially tasked IRENA with producing an annual report series dedicated to tracking progress and providing recommendations on achieving the key energy goals of the UAE Consensus.

Azerbaijan’s Minister for Energy Parviz Shahbazov: “Our cooperation with IRENA will be instrumental in monitoring the energy outcomes of the COP28 consensus and encouraging countries to take action on renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2030. Through COP29, we commit to supporting this process and coordinating our efforts to achieve global energy and climate goals.”

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera: “IRENA, with its 169 global members and the World Energy Transitions Outlook, is ideally positioned to monitor progress towards the historic energy outcomes of COP28. Today’s cooperation with COP29 ensures the continuity needed to triple renewables and double energy efficiency by 2030, from Dubai to Baku and beyond.”

IRENA will lead the publication of the new annual tracking report each year from 2024 to 2030. It will feature the latest data and projections on the tripling of renewables and doubling of energy efficiency, providing essential insights for future COP engagements. The Presidencies of COP28 and COP29, along with the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), will collaborate to release the 2024 edition.

The call to triple renewable power capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030 is a crucial component of the global response to climate change, aimed at keeping the 1.5°C target within reach. The UAE Consensus further emphasizes the need to transition away from fossil fuels in a just, orderly, and equitable manner to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
