Egypt Allocates Vast Land for Green Hydrogen Production

The Egyptian government has designated approximately 41,700 square kilometers (16,100 square miles) of land to the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to accelerate the development of renewable energy projects focused on green hydrogen production, according to NREA’s chairman, Mohamed El-Khayat.

During a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, El-Khayat stated that procedures for allocating an additional 900 square kilometers of land are nearing completion.

El-Khayat also revealed that the designated project sites for green hydrogen production will support 27 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed with various investors. These projects have a combined capacity of about 115 GW, consisting of 52 GW of solar power and 63 GW of wind energy.

Furthermore, land plots in the Red Sea and Suez governorates have been allocated for renewable energy projects with a potential capacity of approximately 4.4 GW of wind energy and 11 GW of solar energy.

Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized the need to swiftly convert framework agreements on green hydrogen into formal contracts. Randa Al-Minshawi, Head of the Technical Secretariat of the National Green Hydrogen Council, explained that they have already signed 27 MoUs and 10 binding framework agreements, and they are preparing to finalize two additional binding agreements.
