EIT InnoEnergy Initiates European Solar Academy

EIT InnoEnergy, a prominent innovator in sustainable energy, has launched the European Solar Academy, as part of the European Commission’s Net-Zero Academies initiative.

The InnoEnergy Skills Institute will manage the Academy, aiming to reskill and upskill 65,000 workers across the European solar photovoltaic (PV) value chain within its initial two years.

With the EU targeting nearly 600 GW of solar PV installations by 2030 and aiming to fulfill 40% of its net-zero technology needs with European-made products, a substantial workforce expansion is imperative.

Downstream, an estimated 400,000 additional trained workers will be required by 2030 for installation, while upstream manufacturing will need an estimated 50,000 more skilled workers to meet the 30 GW domestic solar energy production goal.

EIT InnoEnergy’s market research has identified specific skills gaps in grid connection, installation, and manufacturing processes, which the Academy aims to address.

The Academy will tackle these skills shortages, especially for the growing number of solar SMEs. Collaborating closely with the industry, the InnoEnergy Skills Institute will establish a comprehensive library of over 40 courses with industry-recognized certifications spanning the entire value chain.

Building on the InnoEnergy Skills Institute’s proven training model, the Academy will certify over 80 local training providers and mobilize a network of industry and workforce partners to deliver courses on a large scale.

Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, emphasized the critical role of boosting solar PV manufacturing in Europe for energy security, competitiveness, and resilience. He stated that the Solar Academy’s launch demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to reducing emissions while creating quality jobs in the EU.

Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, added that solar power is central to Europe’s energy transition, with the potential to generate thousands of jobs across the continent. The Net Zero Academy will empower European workers to seize this opportunity and further support the ambitious REPowerEU goals.

Oana Penu, Director of the InnoEnergy Skills Institute, highlighted the Academy’s foundation on a tried and tested model. The Battery Academy, which has trained 67,000 workers to date, sets a benchmark for training excellence and serves as a blueprint for the Solar Academy.

The InnoEnergy Skills Institute is committed to working closely with businesses across the solar PV value chain to develop tailored learning pathways that meet their specific workforce needs.

The European Solar Academy was officially announced at the European Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance (ESIA) PV Forum held at Intersolar Europe in Munich.
