Flutterwave awarded Fintech of the Year at the African Banker Awards

Flutterwave, Africa’s leading startup by valuation, has been honored as ‘Fintech of the Year’ at the African Banker Awards.

This accolade recognizes its substantial contributions to the financial technology sector across the continent. The award commends Flutterwave and other pioneering companies and individuals who have set new benchmarks in innovation and have driven growth in Africa’s banking sector over the past year.

This distinction is Flutterwave’s third international recognition in 2024, following its inclusion in CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list and Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list.

While the specific timing of Flutterwave’s IPO remains uncertain, these awards may lend significant support to its public offering ambitions. Since CEO Olugbenga Agboola announced the company’s intention to pursue its 2022 IPO plans in August 2023, many have linked Flutterwave to an initial public offering. Furthermore, the fintech has recently restructured its executive team following several high-profile departures in recent months.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and creativity of the entire team at Flutterwave. It reaffirms our mission to simplify payments for endless possibilities, and we remain committed to developing solutions that enable multinationals to expand in and within Africa, and support African companies in competing globally,” Agboola’s statement continued.

Additionally, Flutterwave has secured preliminary approval for a payment aggregator license from the Central Bank of Mozambique. This move is part of its strategy to expand into the southeastern African region. Upon final approval, this license will enable Flutterwave to facilitate business expansion into Mozambique and support global enterprises looking to establish a presence in Africa.

Flutterwave’s primary business involves processing online payments, thereby enabling international corporations like Uber to accept payments from African businesses and customers. The fintech provides these enterprises with the capability to accept diverse payment forms, including mobile money, card payments, and bank transfers.
