Fortescue, the global metal mining and green energy company from Australia, has embarked on its first green hydrogen venture in Arizona with the development of the $550 million “Arizona Hydrogen” facility in Buckeye.
The facility, spanning 159 acres, will play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the region’s mobility sector, particularly heavy-duty on-road transportation, which currently consumes approximately 5 billion gallons of diesel annually.
During a recent soil turn ceremony at the site, Fortescue demonstrated its commitment to the project, which aims to produce up to 11,000 tons of liquid green hydrogen yearly upon completion.
The facility’s potential to significantly reduce emissions aligns with Arizona’s efforts to foster a cleaner energy economy. Economic projections indicate that the construction phase alone could generate over 2,000 jobs and contribute millions to the state’s GDP and tax revenue.
Once operational, Arizona Hydrogen will directly employ 40 individuals and create hundreds more indirect and induced jobs, further boosting the local economy.
Sandra Watson, President and CEO of Arizona Commerce Authority, lauds the project as a testament to Arizona’s leadership in sustainability and clean energy innovation, underscoring its importance in shaping the state’s future clean energy economy.
