Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures, has chosen Fugro to carry out a comprehensive geotechnical investigation of their lease area in the New York Bight.
The project’s 3 GW potential capacity could provide clean energy to over 1 million homes, playing a pivotal role in the US energy transition.
Building on Previous Success
This geotechnical work builds upon a successful site characterization program completed by Fugro in 2023.
The program encompassed the entire 510 km² lease area and potential export cable corridors, resulting in a preliminary earth model detailing geophysical and environmental conditions to inform the wind farm’s concept design.
The geotechnical investigation will further refine this model through seabed sampling and ground condition testing, ensuring the safe and efficient engineering of wind turbine foundations.
Advanced Technology and Real-Time Data Analysis
The program is already underway and will continue throughout the summer utilizing two specialized vessels: one dedicated to seabed sampling and downhole in situ testing, and the other focused on advanced seabed cone penetration tests (CPTs).
For the CPT scope, Fugro is deploying its cutting-edge SEACALF® MkV Deep Drive® system, enabling rapid, high-quality data acquisition with enhanced safety and reduced emissions—up to 40% less compared to traditional technology.
Additionally, Fugro’s cloud-based Geo-data engagement platform, VirGeo®, facilitates near real-time data analysis, empowering swift decision-making and optimized field operations.
Powering a Greener Future
“Our lease area in the New York Bight has the potential to power over 1 million US homes with renewable energy from offshore wind,” stated Doug Perkins, President and Project Director of Community Offshore Wind.
“This survey work is a crucial step forward in ensuring our projects are developed sustainably and responsibly, while preparing us to deliver new clean energy to communities throughout the region and help New York and New Jersey achieve their leading climate targets.”
Expertise in Offshore Renewables
Céline Gerson, Fugro’s President and Group Director in the Americas, added, “Fugro is immensely proud to be entrusted once again by Community Offshore Wind to provide the Geo-data and analysis required to advance their offshore wind project in the New York Bight.
Leveraging our extensive experience in offshore renewable energy projects both regionally and globally, we are fully committed to supporting the significant contributions this project will make to the US energy transition.”
