HDF Energy Opens World’s First Megawatt Fuel Cell Factory in France

HDF Energy, a French green hydrogen pioneer, has unveiled a groundbreaking fuel cell manufacturing plant, a world first due to its capacity to produce units exceeding 1 megawatt (MW).

This bold move aims to decarbonize heavy transportation sectors and bolster public power grids.

The factory, situated in Blanquefort near Bordeaux, will produce “high power” PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) green hydrogen fuel cells. These cells will primarily target heavy maritime and rail sectors, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel engines.

Initially, the plant will produce modular 1.5 MW fuel cells developed in partnership with Ballard Power Systems. However, HDF Energy has ambitious plans to expand its product range, ultimately offering fuel cells ranging from 1 MW to 10 MW.

Although the facility officially opened in late June, commercial production will begin in 2026. The company aims to ramp up production capacity to an impressive 1 GW by 2030. A pre-production and testing phase will commence in 2025.

The French government, with EU approval, will finance the green hydrogen fuel cell facility under the €1.4 billion ($1.52 billion) Hy2Move phase of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) initiative. While the exact funding amount remains undisclosed, this support underscores the project’s significance.

HDF Energy’s fuel cells are set to revolutionize transportation by replacing diesel engines in freight and shunting locomotives with hydrogen-powered systems. This shift towards cleaner energy sources aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

This landmark facility is a testament to HDF Energy’s commitment to developing innovative and scalable green hydrogen solutions. By targeting heavy transportation, the company is paving the way for a more sustainable future, where clean energy powers industries and reduces our reliance on fossil fuels.
