Iberdrola Secures Approval for Portugal’s Largest Wind Farm

Iberdrola has successfully obtained the final environmental permit from the Portuguese government to construct the nation’s largest wind farm, the Tâmega Eólico project.

This significant milestone follows the favorable Environmental Impact Statement received in March 2023 and signifies compliance with all environmental conditions and measures.

With a capacity of 274 MW, the new wind farm will generate enough electricity to power 128,000 homes annually.

Located in the municipalities of Vila Real and Braga, it will be integrated into the existing Tâmega pumped-storage hydroelectric complex, forming the country’s largest hybrid clean energy system.

This integration will maximize the grid connection’s capacity, ensuring a substantial increase in green energy production for Portuguese homes and businesses.

Having secured environmental approval, Iberdrola is now pursuing a production license from the Portuguese Directorate General of Energy and Geology. The company aims to obtain all necessary permits and commence construction in early 2025.

The incorporation of wind energy into the Tâmega hydroelectric complex will enhance the overall system’s ability to deliver clean, affordable, and competitive electricity.

This hybrid approach maximizes energy output and production by leveraging the complementary nature of wind and hydropower technologies.

The shared grid connection, substation, and other infrastructure will optimize resource utilization and minimize environmental impact.

Iberdrola actively implements measures that support and protect the local ecosystems surrounding the wind farm.

Building upon the successful practices employed at the Tâmega pumped-storage hydro scheme, the company will continue initiatives such as planting native species, forest management, and creating habitats for wildlife.

The Tâmega hydroelectric project, comprising three plants with a total installed capacity of 1158 MW, represents one of the largest hydroelectric projects completed in Europe in the last 25 years.

This complex plays a vital role in Portugal’s energy landscape, increasing the country’s total installed electricity power by 6% and generating enough electricity to power 440,000 homes. Additionally, it contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and diversifying energy sources.
