Iberdrola’s ambitious global offshore wind endeavor continues to gain momentum with the announcement that the €1 billion Windanker project in Germany has entered the delivery phase.
All major component supply chain contracts are now secured, and fabrication is scheduled to commence in July 2024.
Job Creation and Extensive Supply Chain
The Windanker project will create over 1,200 construction jobs, engaging 130 suppliers across 22 countries. Twenty vessels will be involved in the project’s delivery, highlighting the extensive collaboration required for offshore wind development.
As a leader in offshore innovation, Iberdrola has opted for 21 next-generation offshore wind turbines, each capable of producing approximately 15 MW, among the most powerful available in the market. This choice underscores the company’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.
Record Year for Iberdrola’s Offshore Wind Activity
2024 marks a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind activities. The company recently energized the 496 MW Saint-Brieuc project in France and achieved first power generation at both the 804 MW Vineyard Wind 1 project in the US (the nation’s first large-scale offshore wind project) and the 476 MW Baltic Eagle project in Germany.
Additionally, construction has begun on the East Anglia THREE project in the UK, Iberdrola’s largest-ever wind energy project globally with a capacity of 1,400 MW.
Significant Investment in Offshore Wind
Iberdrola’s strategic plan through 2026 allocates €8.4 billion (54% of its total renewable investment) to offshore wind. This substantial investment is projected to increase the company’s offshore wind capacity by over 160% within three years, from 1,800 MW in 2023 to 4,800 MW in 2026.
Scheduled for full commissioning in 2026, Windanker’s entire generation capacity is already secured through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial and commercial customers.
It is expected to generate enough clean energy to meet the equivalent demand of 315,000 households annually while reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 500,000 tons per year.
Iberdrola’s Commitment to Clean Energy Growth
Ignacio Galán, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, expressed his satisfaction with the Windanker project’s progress, emphasizing the company’s most active year in delivering offshore wind projects. He highlighted the economic benefits of these projects and reaffirmed Iberdrola’s commitment to clean energy growth through offshore wind technology.
