INPEX Begins Geothermal Exploration Drilling in Gifu Prefecture, Japan

INPEX Corporation has started exploratory drilling for geothermal energy development in the Okuhida Onsengo district of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

The company has been conducting surveys in the area to assess the potential of geothermal resources.

The project is situated in the Kansaka area of the Okuhida Onsengo district, nestled at the foot of the Northern Alps in northeastern Gifu Prefecture.

Surface and geophysical surveys, along with previous drilling operations in the vicinity, have indicated the presence of geothermal resources. INPEX has been conducting extensive surveys in the area since 2012.

If the exploratory drilling successfully discovers sufficient geothermal resources, INPEX anticipates that the project’s development will contribute to the expansion of its geothermal business, aligning with the company’s net zero ambitions.

INPEX aims to strengthen its renewable energy initiatives, which are a key component of the five net-zero businesses outlined in the company’s “INPEX Vision @2022” announced in February 2022.

The company is particularly focused on accelerating its geothermal power generation business, leveraging the technologies developed through oil and natural gas exploration.

INPEX is actively engaged in shaping the energy landscape to achieve a net-zero carbon society while fulfilling its responsibilities for the stable development and supply of energy. This geothermal exploration project is a testament to INPEX’s dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
