JGC Japan Corp., an EPC1 operating company under JGC Holdings Corp., and Sumitomo Corp. have formalized an agreement to explore collaborative opportunities in the detailed design, manufacturing, and delivery of floating structural components within the floating offshore wind (FOW) power generation sector.
Objectives of the Collaboration
The two companies aim to leverage their respective strengths to reduce costs, enhance efficiency, and achieve mass production in the production and supply system. They will examine potential collaboration in the following key areas to establish a robust supply chain for floater components:
- Detailed Design of Floater Components: Based on floating foundation design.
- Manufacturer Partnership Development: Engage steel and shipbuilding manufacturers for floater component manufacturing, order placement, and manufacturing management.
- Transportation to Base Ports: Facilitate the transportation of floater components to designated base ports for offshore wind power generation.
Global FOW Market Growth and Challenges
Global FOW power generation capacity is projected to experience significant growth, expanding from approximately 0.2 GW in 2022 to a substantial 269 GW by 2050.
This growth trajectory anticipates the annual installation of approximately 800 new units around 2050. While there’s a pressing need to develop floater components for larger wind turbines, technological advancements are still nascent, and a reliable supply chain remains to be established.
