JOGMEC Boosts Geothermal Energy in Japan with New Subsidy Round

The Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) has announced a fresh round of subsidies aimed at bolstering the exploration and development of six geothermal power projects in Japan.

Three new projects have been selected for the 2024 Geothermal Resource Survey Subsidy Program:

  • Green Power Engineering and IS Holdings will conduct gravity, geochemical, and comprehensive analysis for a project within the Bandai-Asahi National Park in Fukushima Prefecture.
  • Nishimatsu Construction and Marumat Geothermal will undertake geological, geochemical, gravity, and electromagnetic surveys, along with comprehensive analysis, for a project within the Aso-Kuju National Park in Oita Prefecture.
  • INPEX will carry out surface geological surveys, incidental construction, and rare plant, animal, and water quality surveys for a project in Shibetsu-cho, Hokkaido.

Three ongoing projects that received funding in previous rounds will continue to receive support:

  • Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. will conduct integrated analysis for a project in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido.
  • C-Energy Co., Ltd. will focus on ancillary construction, well drilling, and monitoring in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture.
  • Nittetsu Mining Co., Ltd. will perform ancillary construction, well drilling, and water and fumarole monitoring in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The subsidy program aims to mitigate the inherent risks associated with underground resource development and promote geothermal resource exploration and utilization in Japan.

It provides financial support to businesses involved in geothermal resource development, covering expenses for surveys, drilling, and other activities necessary to assess geothermal resources and understand underground structures.

JOGMEC has a track record of supporting geothermal projects that are now operational or in advanced development stages. Notable examples include the Minami-Kayabe, Minami-Aso Yunotani, and Matsuo Hachimantai geothermal power plants, which are currently operating. Additionally, the Katatsumuri Yama plant is under construction, and the Kijiyama plant is undergoing an environmental impact assessment.
