Kenya’s 2024-2025 Budget Prioritizes Transportation Sector

In this year’s Kenyan budget allocations, a significant emphasis has been placed on the railway network expansion plan, with several projects currently on hold due to a lack of funding.

The government recognizes the importance of enhancing railway infrastructure to improve connectivity and boost economic growth.

The Kenyan government has allocated a budget of 193.4 billion shillings (approximately 1.5 billion USD) to road infrastructure for the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

This represents a decrease of 51 billion shillings compared to the previous fiscal year. The funds will be utilized for road construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects, ensuring a well-maintained and efficient road network.

The Treasury has provided a detailed breakdown of the road infrastructure budget, with 86.2 billion shillings allocated for road construction, 37.7 billion for maintenance, and 69.5 billion for rehabilitation.

Additionally, 2.4 billion shillings have been set aside for the ongoing Dongo Kundu bypass project, and 1 billion shillings for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network project.

Railway network development programs will receive a substantial allocation of 29.6 billion shillings (approximately 230.3 million USD).

Furthermore, the air transport sector will be allocated 12.1 billion shillings (approximately 94.2 million USD), and the maritime sector will receive 3.1 billion shillings (approximately 24.1 million USD).

These investments aim to enhance connectivity and promote economic activities in various transportation modes.

The government also plans to invest 200 million shillings (approximately 1.5 million USD) in strengthening the ferry fleet to bolster water transport on Lake Victoria.

Additionally, the Nairobi Railway City project is set to receive funding, and a significant allocation of 316 billion shillings (approximately 2.4 billion USD) will be directed towards promoting e-mobility, aligning with the global trend towards sustainable transportation solutions.
