The Lagos Urban Rail project is a key component of the Lagos transport master plan, aiming to diversify public transportation options and alleviate the strain on the city’s road network.
Red Line Trials Underway
The Red Line, the second phase of Lagos’ urban rail network, is expected to welcome its first passengers by the end of September, according to the city’s municipal administration.
Olasunkanmi Okusaga, Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), confirmed that the line is currently undergoing technical trials with trains.
Red Line to Enhance Connectivity
Officially inaugurated in late February, this 37 km section is designed to improve mobility within the city by interconnecting various areas. The infrastructure, equipped with 13 stations, also connects to major bus terminals in neighborhoods such as Oyingbo, Yaba, Oshodi, Ikeja, and Iju.
Passenger Capacity and Blue Line Complement
Authorities project that the Red Line will offer 37 daily trips and transport up to 500,000 passengers per day. It complements the Blue Line, which commenced operation in September 2023 and has a capacity of 250,000 passengers daily.
Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LMRT) Expansion
These lines are being developed as part of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LMRT) project, which envisions a total of seven lines to connect the different districts of Lagos and its surrounding areas. The Green Line, Yellow Line, Purple Line, Orange Line, and Brown Line are the other sections planned for the network’s expansion.
