Mauritius Telecom Expands 5G Nationwide

Mauritius Telecom (MT), the state-owned telecommunications operator in Mauritius, announced on Tuesday, June 18th, the nationwide expansion of its 5G network.

All of the operator’s customers can now enjoy exceptional download speeds of up to 1 Gbps, improved latency, and seamless connectivity.

In a statement, MT highlighted that “this technology will enable the development of groundbreaking innovations such as augmented and virtual reality and the Internet of Things (IoT). It also promises to revolutionize sectors like transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and sports.”

MT initially introduced 5G in Mauritius in July 2021, a month after obtaining an operating license and frequencies from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA). At that time, the operator’s fifth-generation mobile technology was available in five specific areas of the country. In April 2024, the company launched 5G in Rodrigues.

The nationwide rollout of Mauritius Telecom’s 5G is expected to contribute to the democratization of the service in the Mauritian telecom market. It is also anticipated to intensify competition, particularly in the 5G segment, where MT competes with Emtel and MTML (Chili). At the end of 2022, MT reported 1.05 million customers, while the latest official statistics indicate a total of 1.97 million mobile subscribers in the country.
