Morocco’s Gas Infrastructure Roadmap: LNG Terminal in Nador to Boost Energy Sovereignty

The Moroccan government has unveiled plans to establish liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in the northeastern port of Nador, which is currently under construction.

This announcement comes as part of a comprehensive gas infrastructure roadmap signed by various Moroccan government departments, including equipment, interior, finance, and energy.

According to a statement from the Moroccan government, the roadmap aligns with the nation’s commitment to enhancing energy sovereignty, decarbonizing the economy, and strengthening connectivity with regional and global markets. It also aims to improve coordination between public authorities to accelerate the sustainable development of gas infrastructure.

The implementation of the roadmap will unfold over several years and will involve the establishment of LNG import facilities, encompassing storage and transportation infrastructure.

In the short term, the roadmap focuses on constructing gas pipelines to link domestic gas fields with consumers. It also outlines developing an LNG terminal in Nador West Med port, which will connect to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline.

This project not only supports Morocco’s renewable energy initiatives but also complements the nation’s efforts to attract investments in hydrogen and its planned gas pipeline with Nigeria. It signifies a significant step towards diversifying Morocco’s energy mix and enhancing its energy security.

With these ambitious plans, Morocco aims to bolster its position as a key player in the regional energy landscape while advancing its sustainability and economic development goals.
