Nel ASA Consolidates Focus on Electrolyzer Innovation

Nel ASA, a Norway-based hydrogen technology company, has announced a strategic shift to solely focus on the development and delivery of world-class electrolyzers for the production of renewable hydrogen.

With nearly 100 years of experience in electrolyzer development and thousands of installations worldwide, Nel is capitalizing on its “unparalleled track record.” The company will now concentrate 100% of its capacity and expertise on creating electrolyzers that are both highly reliable and energy-efficient.

Nel is actively expediting the advancement of next-generation electrolyzers. In addition to refining its existing proton exchange membrane (PEM) and atmospheric alkaline electrolyzers, the company is making substantial investments in cutting-edge pressurized alkaline and PEM technologies.

A joint venture between Nel and General Motors’ research and development departments has led to rapid progress in developing next-generation PEM electrolyzers. Simultaneously, Nel’s groundbreaking redesign of the pressurized alkaline concept has reached the prototype stage.

Furthermore, the company has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the continued development of its anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer technology.

Nel has recently established several strategic partnerships. These include collaborations with Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies to offer turnkey 100 MW building blocks for hydrogen production facilities.

Another notable partnership is a technology licensing agreement with Reliance Industries, India’s largest private corporation. This agreement provides Nel access to India’s rapidly growing hydrogen market while meeting Reliance’s global demand for electrolyzers.

In a significant development, Nel’s former Fueling division, Cavendish Hydrogen, has been spun off and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Cavendish Hydrogen will primarily focus on developing hydrogen fueling equipment for heavy-duty vehicles. Nel CEO Håkon Volldal expressed confidence in Cavendish Hydrogen’s future success and wished them well.

Following the spin-off, Nel retains a workforce of around 450 employees at its facilities in Norway and the United States. These dedicated professionals are fully committed to achieving the company’s ambitious goal of delivering the industry’s most reliable and energy-efficient electrolyzers at scale.
