New Zealand Flooding: Evacuations and Emergency Response on East Coast | Hawke’s Bay & Tairawhiti

Torrential rains and powerful waves battering the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island have forced evacuations as rivers overflow and coastal areas experience inundation.

Local authorities in the Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti regions have activated emergency centers, issuing overnight flood warnings and evacuation notices to ensure the safety of residents.

Despite a decrease in intensity, Tairawhiti Civil Defence reports that the heavy rainfall persists and is expected to continue until Friday night.

Crews are actively assessing damage to roads, monitoring river levels, and inspecting bridges throughout the region.

The affected regions, Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti, were severely impacted by flooding earlier in 2023 following the devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Authorities urge residents to exercise patience while assessments are ongoing and to remain vigilant as the situation continues to evolve.
