NeXtWind and VSB Group Join Forces for Major German Wind Farm Repowering

At the end of June, VSB and NeXtWind held a joint event to inform stakeholders about their collaboration on the Zörbig repowering project.

The partnership aims to leverage combined resources and expertise, along with strong local political support, to ensure efficient project execution and maintain high quality standards.

This cooperation sets a new standard for the renewable energy industry, showcasing the significant added value achieved through close collaboration between project developers. This approach fosters synergies, particularly in maximizing the efficient use of available space, to further advance the energy transition.

The Zörbig repowering project will replace 27 outdated installations (40.5 MW) with 16 state-of-the-art Vestas V172 units. This upgrade will increase the total capacity to 115.2 MW, nearly tripling the power output despite a reduction in the number of turbines. The project is expected to provide clean electricity to approximately 80,000 households upon completion in 2027.

Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, emphasized the positive and constructive interactions between citizens, local authorities, and project developers in this community-driven project. He expressed confidence in the partnership with NeXtWind to expedite project implementation.

Matthias Egert, Mayor of Zörbig, voiced his full support for the collaboration between VSB and NeXtWind. He highlighted the town’s long-standing, positive relationship with renewable energy project developers and emphasized the local value generated by this repowering initiative.

Professor Werner Süss, Co-CEO of NeXtWind, underlined the swift implementation of the wind turbine construction in Zörbig, made possible through the close partnership with VSB. He views the collaboration as beneficial for all parties involved, including the city, property owners, and the energy transition as a whole.

Dr. Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group, stressed the importance of utilizing all available potential to achieve ambitious climate targets. He believes that repowering projects like Zörbig, which prioritize advanced technologies and adhere to stringent environmental standards, play a crucial role in supporting this sustainable transformation process.
