Nigeria has deployed a new technological system called Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) to enhance its border security measures.
This cutting-edge technology integrates with major global databases, including INTERPOL 24/7 and the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS), tofacilitate smoother passenger entry while simultaneously bolstering national security.
Inter-Ministry Collaboration
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted that this project is the result of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development. This inter-ministry cooperation underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to modernizing its immigration and security infrastructure.
Pre-Arrival Screening for Enhanced Security
One of the primary benefits of the API and PNR system is the ability of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to conduct pre-arrival screening of travelers. This is accomplished by collecting passenger information from airlines and cross-referencing it with international databases such as INTERPOL and MIDAS. This proactive approach allows the NIS to identify and intercept potential security threats before they enter the country.
State-of-the-Art Command and Control Centre
In addition to the API and PNR system, the Minister announced the completion of a new Command and Control Centre for the Air Border Control Management System at the NIS headquarters. Representatives from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Canada have reportedly praised this facility as one of the best in the world. This advanced command center utilizes technology to monitor air traffic, analyze passenger data, and coordinate seamlessly with security forces to ensure efficient and secure air travel.
