North America Poised for Massive Battery Cell Production Capacity by 2030

A yearly output of 1,200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells holds the potential to power a minimum of 12 million new electric vehicles (EVs) annually.

The Argonne National Laboratory anticipates that North America’s battery cell production capacity will surpass a significant milestone of 1,200 GWh by the year 2030.

This substantial production capability is estimated to be sufficient for supplying 12 to 15 million new EVs each year, based on the assumption of average battery capacities ranging from 80 to 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per vehicle.

Within the United States, the majority of battery production is projected to occur near the sites of vehicle assembly plants, primarily concentrated in the Midwest and Southeast regions.

This geographic proximity between battery cell manufacturing and vehicle assembly is crucial for reducing shipping times and transportation costs incurred by EV manufacturers.
