Nova Scotia Manufacturers Embrace Green Hydrogen to Slash Emissions

Three major industrial manufacturers in Nova Scotia – Michelin, Port Hawkesbury Paper, and the Shaw Group – are taking a bold step towards a greener future.

They are investigating the potential of using green hydrogen to power their operations, replacing fossil fuels and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

These companies have launched a feasibility study to assess the potential of using green hydrogen for industrial heating. This initiative comes at a time when Nova Scotia is witnessing growing interest in renewable hydrogen production.

Although commercial-scale production hasn’t begun yet, two projects by Bear Head Energy and EverWind Fuels have already received approvals, signaling a promising future for green hydrogen in the province.

The proposed green hydrogen facilities will be located at Point Tupper industrial park, conveniently close to Port Hawkesbury Paper. This proximity makes it an ideal location for these companies to access and utilize this clean energy source.

Geoff Clarke, Director of Sustainability and Economic Development at Port Hawkesbury Paper, emphasizes the importance of understanding the positive impact green hydrogen can have on their business.

He highlights the company’s commitment to improving sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. Together with Shaw and Michelin, they are actively seeking ways to incorporate green hydrogen into their operations once it becomes commercially available.

The non-profit organization Net Zero Atlantic is leading the charge, coordinating the feasibility study and securing funding. The majority of the funding, a $450,000 grant, comes from the province’s Clean Fuel Fund, with additional contributions from the participating companies.

This collaborative effort demonstrates a shared commitment to exploring innovative and sustainable energy solutions.

This initiative marks a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for Nova Scotia’s industrial sector. By embracing green hydrogen, these manufacturers are not only reducing their environmental impact but also positioning themselves as leaders in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
