Orion Minerals to Highlight South African Projects at Critical Minerals Africa Summit

Orion Minerals’ CEO, Errol Smart, is set to participate in the upcoming Critical Minerals Africa (CMA) Summit in Cape Town on November 6-7.

Smart will highlight the Australian mining firm’s pivotal role in advancing the energy transition minerals industry in South Africa and identify strategic investment opportunities.

Orion Minerals is actively engaged in exploration and infrastructure development in South Africa, aiming to achieve its first copper sales by 2025.

Recent high-grade copper discoveries at the Flat Mines area of the Okiep Copper Project in Northern Cape Province underscore the company’s potential.

Orion Minerals is currently conducting a feasibility study to secure funding for mine development, with the Flat Mines’ estimated reserves of up to 9.4 million tons at 1.3% copper expected to solidify South Africa’s position as a major supplier of this crucial mineral.

The CMA 2024 Summit aims to position Africa as the leading investment hub for critical minerals. Held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energy 2024 conference, this event offers delegates unparalleled access to energy, mining, and finance leaders in Cape Town.

Orion Minerals recently secured R43.7 million (US$2.4 million) from South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation to acquire a controlling stake in the Okiep Copper Project.

This investment will support ongoing exploration and accelerate mine development towards the 2025 production target. Additionally, the company has initiated trial mining at its Prieska Copper Zinc Mine project in the Northern Cape, aiming to expedite the rollout of the 2.4 million metric tons per annum project.

Orion Minerals demonstrates a steadfast commitment to enhancing South Africa’s critical mineral value chain and increasing value-added activities.

The company is conducting feasibility studies for the Jacomynspan Battery Metals Project, which aims to supply high-grade nickel-copper-cobalt-PGE-gold to the Stratega Metals Vapour Refining Project. The latter is poised to become South Africa’s first refinery facility for battery materials.

At CMA 2024, Errol Smart will participate in high-level panel discussions, showcasing the company’s project portfolio, investment strategy, and potential partnership opportunities for future growth and development in the critical minerals sector.
