Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is making strides in the development of two wind projects, each with a capacity of 100 MW, located in Amin and Nimr West.
This initiative aims to diversify PDO’s energy sources and contribute to a more sustainable energy mix.
PDO Oman Wind Projects
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the country’s leading oil and gas producer, has recently announced significant progress in its renewable energy project initiatives.
The Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind projects, each with a capacity of 100 MW, will be situated in Amin and Nimr West, within PDO’s southeastern concession area. These projects capitalize on abundant wind resources, boasting average wind speeds of 8 meters per second.
Feasibility Study and Project Timeline
A comprehensive 12-month feasibility study, including an on-site measurement campaign, has successfully identified the optimal layout for the wind farms, the most suitable turbine model, and the ideal positioning to maximize energy yield. The construction of both wind farms is projected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026.
Following a call for tenders issued in April 2023, PDO is currently evaluating technical and commercial bids received from various developers. The development of the Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms marks a crucial step for PDO in diversifying its energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
North Solar IPP: Expanding Solar Capacity
In parallel with the wind projects, PDO is also advancing the North Solar IPP, a 100 MW photovoltaic solar project located near Qarn Alam Airport in the northern region. This project, expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025, aims to bolster PDO’s energy infrastructure by adding substantial solar capacity to its portfolio.
These initiatives align with PDO’s overarching strategy to diversify its energy sources and enhance energy efficiency. By increasing its renewable energy production capacity, PDO is actively reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, optimizing operational costs, and improving resilience against oil price fluctuations.
Innovation and Future Projects
PDO is also pursuing other innovative projects, such as the integration of solar systems on rooftops of its buildings and the adoption of new technologies to enhance its operations. These endeavors demonstrate PDO’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure while striving to maintain competitiveness in the global energy market.
