Renewed Optimism in EV Sales
Recent concerns about a global drop in EV sales have been overshadowed by encouraging data showing sales are actually on the rise.
Automotive leaders are determined to maintain this positive momentum by launching innovative EV batteries designed to entice new buyers.
A prime example is the significant partnership between the US solid-state EV battery pioneer QuantumScape and Volkswagen’s electrification branch, PowerCo.
Why The Buzz Around Solid-State EV Batteries?
The term “solid-state” might sound technical, but the concept is straightforward. Instead of using a volatile liquid electrolyte, a solid or gel-like material is employed, which reduces fire risks and offers longer range and quicker charging. This combination is highly appealing to consumers.
Hence, auto industry leaders have heavily invested in solid-state EV battery research, despite the lengthy development process spanning over a decade. Just last year, experts predicted that we wouldn’t see solid-state EV batteries until 2030.
That was then. Progress has accelerated, partly due to new hybrid or semi-solid battery variations.
Ramping Up Production
Earlier this year, CleanTechnica reported that several solid-state battery gigafactories are already planned. Now, Volkswagen’s PowerCo division is entering the fray with another factory, thanks to a new agreement with QuantumScape.
The QuantumScape-PowerCo Collaboration
QuantumScape exemplifies the slow-then-rapid pace of solid-state battery commercialization. The company caught CleanTechnica’s attention nearly a decade ago, but things picked up when PowerCo got involved.
In January, CleanTechnica highlighted PowerCo’s rigorous testing of QuantumScape’s solid-state battery, which it passed impressively, marking significant progress.
On July 11, QuantumScape announced a “groundbreaking” agreement with PowerCo for the large-scale production of its lithium-metal solid-state EV battery. The initial target is 40 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year, potentially expanding to 80 gigawatt-hours, enough for about one million EVs annually.
Solid-State Battery Technology
QuantumScape integrates both solid and non-solid elements in its new EV battery. The company explains that most benefits stem from using lithium metal as the anode, necessitating a solid-state separator to prevent dendrite formation and enhance safety, energy density, and charging speed.

QuantumScape combines this ceramic separator with an organic liquid electrolyte for the cathode, known as catholyte. This combination optimizes the battery’s voltage and transport requirements.
Dendrites, which are fern-like growths that can impair battery performance, are a common issue in conventional lithium-ion batteries. QuantumScape’s design aims to mitigate this problem effectively.
Public Policy and EV Advancements
Progress in the solid-state EV battery sector is supported by robust public policies favoring vehicle electrification. In the US, policies promoting domestic EV manufacturing ecosystems are crucial.
The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act has been instrumental in supporting onshoring efforts, including battery production. However, CleanTechnica editor Zachery Shahan points out that policy alone is insufficient. US automakers must enhance their EV sales strategies to accelerate scale-up.
Creating a more EV-friendly consumer culture is also vital. While automakers have limited control over this, recent developments in motorsports, such as NASCAR’s involvement, could help shift public perception.
EV Batteries and Climate Crisis
The growing climate crisis further emphasizes the importance of EV batteries. Hurricane Beryl’s recent impact on Texas highlights how EVs can offer a lifeline during power outages.
With bi-directional charging, EV batteries can power household appliances without emitting pollutants. Additionally, drivers can use their cars’ AC without worsening local air quality.
Homes with undamaged solar panels can generate extra power to run their cars and appliances. Meanwhile, gas stations without power can’t pump fuel, and gas-powered generators face similar limitations, emphasizing the advantages of EVs during crises.
Political Implications
It’s important to note that the Republican Project 2025 plan could significantly undermine the Biden administration’s climate policies, including those supporting renewable energy and EVs.
