Queensland Government Boosts Stanwell Battery Capacity

The Queensland government is ramping up its support for renewable energy by enhancing Stanwell’s Central Queensland battery energy storage system, reaffirming its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and fostering a sustainable energy landscape.

The Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund will substantially invest $448.2 million to double the capacity of Stanwell’s battery project, making it Queensland’s largest committed battery initiative. In collaboration with Tesla and Yurika, the project will boost the battery’s capacity to 300MW, capable of supplying energy to the grid for up to four hours.

“According to Deloitte modelling, Queensland’s swift transition to a clean energy economy will yield substantial economic benefits,” Miles remarked. “By aiming for 80 per cent renewable energy by 2035, we anticipate unlocking $270 billion in new investment and creating $430 billion in economic opportunities.”

The construction of the project will take place at the Stanwell Power Station near Rockhampton, with plans to transform the site into a Clean Energy Hub. Commencing in May 2024, construction is expected to conclude by mid-2027.

This investment not only accelerates the shift to cleaner energy but also ensures ongoing investment and job stability in the Rockhampton and Central Queensland region.

QLD Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni, emphasized the project’s economic benefits, highlighting its contribution to providing sustainable energy for Central Queensland. He also underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining public ownership of Queensland’s energy assets, ensuring that Queenslanders reap the rewards of the energy transition.

Michael O’Rourke, CEO of Stanwell, underscored the significance of dispatchable energy assets like the battery in reshaping the energy system, emphasizing its crucial role in Queensland’s energy future. He noted that the project will deliver clean, reliable energy while generating employment opportunities, investment, and growth for Central Queensland.

Peter Ong, State Secretary of the Electrical Trades Union, commended the government’s dedication to the energy transition, emphasizing the benefits for workers, the environment, and the cost of living.
