New Partnership Strengthens Rural Electrification Efforts
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of Nigeria, known for its active role in promoting electricity access in rural areas, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mercy Corps on July 4th. This partnership aims to bolster electricity cooperatives and improve electricity access across Nigeria.
MoU Focuses on Capacity Building and Technical Assistance
The MoU outlines several key objectives, including the provision of capacity building for the Rural Electricity Users Cooperative Society (REUCS), technical assistance for the Africa Mini-grid Programme (AMP), andsupport for the development of a sustainable business model for the operation and maintenance of the Korean Energy Project.
REA’s Commitment to Project Sustainability
Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director of REA, emphasized the agency’s dedication to ensuring the long-term sustainability of projects.
He highlighted the importance of planning for project completion and implementing measures to ensure continuity after project handover. Mercy Corps, with its extensive experience, will assist REA in achieving this goal through this strategic partnership.
REA’s Role in Rural Electrification
The REA, operating under the Federal Ministry of Power, has been tasked with electrifying underserved and unserved communities since 2005. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians. The agency is currently implementing the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), and various other programs.
