Australia : Renewable Energy Groups Call for Greater Ambition in Clean Energy Transition

Two organizations, RE-Alliance and the Community Power Agency, working closely with regional communities that house large-scale renewable energy projects, have expressed their approval for the Australian government’s $22.7 billion investment in the country’s renewable energy future, as announced in the 2024-25 budget.

However, they are advocating for a more ambitious approach to foster a strong partnership with crucial regional stakeholders in the clean energy transition.

The organizations have commended the $209.3 million allocation for the newly established Net Zero Economic Authority, which will aid regional communities once the legislation is enacted.

They are optimistic that the Authority’s purview will extend beyond just emissions-intensive trade-exposed industries.

“We eagerly anticipate collaborating with the government to ensure regional communities have the resources to leverage the advantages of hosting renewables.”

Bray appreciated the $10 million allocation over two years for public information on the net zero transition to enlighten regional areas.

However, he emphasized the need for more ambitious strides by the mid-year budget update to instill confidence in the renewables shift across the regions.

Jarra Hicks, Director of the Community Power Agency, underscored the importance of the government aligning its investment in renewable infrastructure and technology with funding to build trust in the clean energy transition across rural and regional Australia.

“It’s essential for the government to create opportunities for local involvement. We need to prioritize the benefits for regional communities. And we need to communicate openly about the ongoing changes and their implications,” stated Dr. Hicks.

One suggestion that did not receive funding was a network of 50 independent Local Energy Hubs in renewable energy hotspot regions to support communities.

RE-Alliance and the Community Power Agency have been in discussions with MPs and Ministers over the past six months on initiatives to support host communities.

The two organizations will be hosting a webinar on 20 May 2024, delving into the implications of the budget for renewable energy regions as the transition gains momentum this decade.
