Root-Power Partners with Eclipse Power Networks and RJ Power for New Battery Storage Initiative

Root-Power, inaugurated in July 2024 with the support of the YLEM Group, has revealed the engagement of Eclipse Power Networks, experts in electricity connections, and the specialized electrical group, RJ Power.

These alliances will bolster Root-Power’s Coryton Energy Park venture in Corringham, Essex, which began construction in May 2024.

Eclipse Power Networks has been selected as the independent distribution network operator (IDNO) at Coryton Park.

Their responsibilities include adopting segments of the private and distribution networks installed as part of the project, managing, and operating them throughout the project’s lifespan.

RJ Power will serve as the independent connection provider (ICP) at the Essex site. As an ICP, RJ Power will design and construct the grid connection at the energy park, which will eventually be managed by Eclipse Power Networks.

Their tasks encompass all design work, obtaining approval from both Eclipse Power Networks and UK Power Networks (DNO), procuring plant items, and constructing the connection before its adoption by the DNO and IDNO.

Neil Brooks, Managing Director of Root-Power, expressed: “We are thrilled to collaborate with both Eclipse and RJ Power to fortify our Coryton Project and advance our mission of supporting the UK’s energy transition.

By leveraging an IDNO, we have expedited the connection timeframe for our Coryton Energy Park project.

The flexibility offered by partnering with Eclipse Power has enabled our ICP, RJ Power, to design the connection with enhanced efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“At Root-Power, we are dedicated to our goal of adding 150 MW of storage capacity to our portfolio in 2024 and 2025.

Coryton Energy Park is the inaugural project in this journey, and we have carefully chosen Eclipse Power and RJ Power for their demonstrated expertise within the UK power sector.

“Our projects are crucial in fostering a more sustainable future by expanding the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure.

With battery storage solutions being essential for achieving net-zero targets, this is a critical period for us to invest in long-term partnerships with industry leaders.”

Charles Deacon, Managing Director of Eclipse Power Solutions, remarked: “We are pleased to have worked collaboratively with Root Power, UKPN, UCE, and RJ Power to bring this energy park online, offering much-needed local balancing and grid flexibility.

Addressing the unique challenges of this being an ANM connection, using an IDNO can provide economic efficiencies and engineering flexibility compared to the local DNO route. Eclipse Power looks forward to ongoing collaboration with Root Power on future projects.”

RJ Power Connections Director, Matt Woolley, added: “Securing this contract was contingent on a well-formulated strategy with our client, highlighting the skill and dedication of the individuals involved. This relationship has developed from demonstrating our capabilities during our work with our esteemed client over the years.

“The key to successful delivery will be leveraging the skills and expertise across the RJ Power group of companies, supporting crucial areas of the contract and fully collaborating with our client.”
