SAICE to Collaborate with Government to Address South Africa’s Infrastructure Hurdles

The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), an industry organization, expresses its commitment to partnering with the government to tackle the nation’s infrastructure challenges and thereby stimulate economic growth.

SAICE acknowledges the fundamental role of infrastructure in driving the nation’s development, reducing poverty, and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SAICE eagerly anticipates engaging with the new Cabinet to address the infrastructure disparities identified in the SAICE Infrastructure Report Card (IRC).

This engagement includes strategic approaches to resolve challenges in the transportation, energy, and water sectors. It also emphasizes the need for innovative funding mechanisms, good governance, and the professionalization of the civil engineering industry.

Strengthening technical capacity within public institutions and ensuring the involvement of technical decision-makers throughout the entire infrastructure project lifecycle are deemed crucial steps towards achieving good governance and a sustainable economy.

“Through collaboration, SAICE aims to foster excellence and innovation in civil engineering to meet societal needs. By working alongside the government, we can drive the necessary reforms and attract the required investments to revitalize South Africa’s infrastructure and unlock its full economic potential,” stated the organization.

“While the SAICE IRC of 2022 highlighted areas needing improvement with an overall grade of ‘D,’ it also presents an opportunity for collaboration and innovation to enhance our public infrastructure,” the report notes. “By working together, we can ensure these critical systems meet the nation’s needs and support a sustainable future.”

South Africa benefits from comprehensive policy frameworks, such as the National Development Plan (NDP 2030) and the National Infrastructure Plan 2050, which provide a strategic roadmap for infrastructure investment and economic growth.

“SAICE remains dedicated to promoting growth, excellence, and sustainability in the industry, and we look forward to ongoing dialogue and collaboration with government to achieve these goals,” the organization concluded.
