Senegal Aims for 37,000 Electric Vehicles in National Fleet by 2030

Senegal’s energy transition policies, already underway in public transportation, are now targeting personal vehicles, which constitute the largest share of the national automobile fleet.

Senegal has set a goal to incorporate 37,000 electric vehicles (EVs) into its national fleet by 2030 as part of its sustainable mobility initiatives.

The country is currently developing a regulatory framework tailored to the implementation of this roadmap. A recent workshop focused on a feasibility study based on models from Rwanda and Kenya. The strategies under consideration include exemption policies to reduce the costs of acquiring vehicles, spare parts, and maintenance.

The government aims to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions in road transport by 2% through this program. This policy will complement various other government initiatives promoting sustainable mobility.

In the public transport sector, Senegal has launched the Regional Express Train, which operates with less polluting locomotives. Additionally, the recently inaugurated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network utilizes 100% electric buses.
